The first Chinese-Russian Symposium was held at Gubkin University to discuss emission reduction and greening the energy industry

On 22-23 January 2024, the first Chinese-Russian Symposium aimed to discuss emission reduction and greening the energy industry was held at Gubkin University in the online format.

The symposium was organized within the new academic alliance for green development of the Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China established to identify promising areas of scientific research to reduce emissions and improve the environmental friendliness of the energy industry, as well as to provide a platform for academic exchange in the field of green, low-carbon and sustainable development.

The symposium program included a special section for faculty members and researchers and a section for undergraduate, graduate and PhD students. More than 500 representatives from 16 Russian and Chinese universities participated in the symposium. In total, 76 researchers, experts and students delivered keynote presentations.

The section for faculty members and researchers was opened by Professor Vladimir Koshelev, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Gubkin University, and Professor Alexander Maksimenko, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of Gubkin University, who noted the importance of such scientific events intended to consolidate the efforts of Russian and Chinese universities, discuss and implement priority environmental initiatives for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Professor Caili Dai, Vice President of China University of Petroleum (East China) noted that global carbon emission reduction and green environmental protection technologies play a great role in social and economic development, and education is an important driver for mitigating the consequences of climate change, protecting environment and achieving sustainable development.

During the section for undergraduate, graduate and PhD students, Mr. Yuri Dubinov, Vice-chair of the green union of the Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China, Associate Professor of the Department of Metal Science and Nonmetallic Materials at Gubkin University, and Mr. Yu Jixian, Head of International Cooperation and Exchange Office at China Petroleum University (East China), spoke about expanding the event activities through inclusion of the youth day for young researchers to be able to share findings and conduct joint research aimed at greening the energy industry.

From 2023 to 2025, Gubkin University together with the China Petroleum University (East China) are co-chairs of the Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China, an academic exchange platform focused on the needs of global energy transformation, which seeks to deepen educational exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia. The symposium was one of the first large-scale events planned to be held in the next two years.
