Gubkin University is the leading industry institution that trains professionals for the oil and gas complex and carries out research over the whole range of the industry issues.

Presently, the total number of the university research and academic staff equals to 1176, including 282 Doctors and 605 Candidates of Science.

One of the most important achievements of the research and academic activity of Gubkin University scientists is the establishment of research and academic schools that have made a huge impact on scientific and technological development in Russian oil and gas industry, training of scientific and engineering personnel of high qualification. Currently, 27 research and academic schools, led by famous scientists, successfully work at the University.

The range of research issues is quite large and includes oil and gas search in the Arctic shelf, tundra and taiga areas of Siberia; development of oil and gas fields, including those in difficult geological and climatic conditions; design, construction and operation of pipeline transport systems; engineering mechanics; chemical technology and ecology; automation and computer engineering; economics and legal issues.

One of the important success criteria of scientific and technological development is demand for research findings among businesses.

Gubkin University has actively cooperated with the oil and gas industry during the whole period of its fledging years. At the moment, the University carries out large contractual work for oil and gas industry organizations. Among the key customers are such companies as Gazprom, LUKOIL, Rosneft and Transneft. In addition, the large amount of research is accomplished within government funding under the programs and grants given by the Ministry for Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Ministry for Energy of the Russian Federation, the Federal Agency for Mineral Resources, and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research etc. In 2016, the University carried out research and development work amounting to 1,241 million rubles.

To integrate science and business in the oil and gas sector of the fuel and energy complex, the University with support of the Russian government established the Technology Platform "Technologies for Production and Use of Hydrocarbons" in 2010. At the moment, the total number of the Platform participants reached 262, including 41 higher education establishments, 32 research institutions, 7 experimental design offices, 98 project and service organizations, 75 manufacturing enterprises and 9 foreign organizations. The Technology Platform contains information on developed technologies and other findings of the participants' activity as well as detailed information on research and production equipment, which enables to increase the opportunities for researchers significantly.

In 2009 in order to commercialize the results of research the Technological Park was established on the basis of the University. The Technopark is a unit that provides functional support to projects implemented by small innovative enterprises throughout the life cycle. This approach enables to conduct research in laboratories equipped with advanced equipment, and project management and maintenance – from the launch to the acceptance of results by the customer – are assigned to a special unit.

Many development results of the University researchers are filed as patents and applications for intellectual property items. Currently, the intellectual property portfolio of Gubkin University consists of 172 invention and useful model patents, one patent for a design, 15 certificates of software and database registration, one trademark and 15 know-how. 47 items of intellectual property have been registered. Over the past three years, two contracts on alienation of patents and three license agreements on granting the right to use two inventions and industrial model have been signed. Within the law regarding establishment of small innovative enterprises (SIEs) at the premises of higher educational institutions for the purpose of practical application of the intellectual activity results, nine SIEs have been established using eight know-how and one invention patent as foundation contribution to the authorized capital.

An important role in provision of information resources for research activity at the University is played by the Research Library which builds up collections of research publications (printed, electronic and unpublished) and informs library members. The scientific collection of the Library includes abstracts of dissertations, dissertations, monographs, scientific and technical documentation, abstracts of scientific conferences, official reference documents, scientific periodicals and is available in the electronic catalog and the electronic library system.
