In the mid-1930s, the geological exploration in the vast Volga-Ural area, where the Orenburg Region is located, was started on the initiative of the founder of the national petroleum geology, the Academician Ivan Gubkin. The commercial oil reserves were discovered in the north-west of the Region. On November 6, 1966, the first gas was produced from the exploration well and the Orenburg oil, gas and condensate field was opened. Based on these unique reserves, Orenburggazprom was established – the company which provided development, production, transportation and processing of natural gas and gas condensate.
