Summer Schools

Annually Gubkin University welcomes students, young researchers and professionals interested to strengthen their academic background, expand their professional and social network and explore the Russian culture, traditions and hospitality during the summer season in Moscow.

Summer Schools are organized in cooperation with foreign partner universities, research institutes and companies.

Modern solutions for oil and gas field development, well construction and logistics

July 02-09, 2017
Gubkin University, Moscow, Russian Federation

Overview: the School is organized as a part of the cooperation program between Gubkin University and foreign partner universities such as University of Stavanger, Montanuniversität Leoben, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Molde University College. The program includes professional training and technical tours as well as cultural activities in Moscow and cities along the Golden Ring. All participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the program. International students, young researchers and professionals are invited to register.

Program details

Module 1: Industry overview – Energy. Oil and gas. Well construction and the Arctic.

  1. Presentation of Gubkin University and international Joint Master’s programs.
  2. Global energy trends.
  3. Oil and gas in the modern world: conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources.
  4. Evolution of well construction techniques: problems and solutions.
  5. Modern technologies and scientific and technical issues in exploration and development of the Russian Arctic offshore fields.

Module 2: Field development. Drilling technologies. Logistics (available at option).

  1. Modern technologies for safe and effective onshore and offshore drilling of directional and horizontal wells.
    Classes will be held at Offshore Drilling Center and advanced training facilities/ simulators of the Department of Oil and Gas Wells Drilling.
  2. Features of onshore and offshore field development: current status, challenges and prospects.
    Classes will be held in specialized lecture rooms and the Oil Field Development Control Room.
  3. Oil and gas logistics.

Module 3: Cultural activities.


Fees: 15,000 RUB – single room accommodation; 10,000 RUB – double room accommodation. The fees cover registration for the training course, including program module 1 and 2, accommodation, the University tour and food arrangement (breakfast and lunch). The cost for sightseeing tours within the cultural program is calculated individually.


Modern aspects of design, manufacture and maintenance of fuel and energy complex equipment

June 29 – July 12, 2017
Gubkin University, Moscow, Russian Federation

Overview: participants will obtain an up-to-date, in-depth and complete overview of contemporary issues related to computer modeling, manufacturing and maintaining compressor equipment for the fuel and energy complex. The program includes subject presentations, reports and lectures given by Russian and foreign experts (2 credits/ 72 academic hours in total). After completing the program and passing a test, participants will receive a certificate. Second and third year Bachelor’s students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Master’s students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Gubkin University are invited to register.

Language of instruction: Russian and English.

Program details

The following issues characterized by high innovative and cooperative potential have been selected for the program in 2017:

  • tribological characteristics of lubricants,
  • friction units in energy equipment,
  • application of lubricants,
  • wear-resistant coating for friction units,
  • energy equipment failures,
  • compressor design, maintenance and calculation,
  • computer modeling of the fuel and energy complex equipment.

Introduction to petroleum science and technology. philosophy and methodology of science

July 31 – August 12, 2017
Gubkin University, Moscow, Russian Federation

Overview: the School is organized by the Department of Thermodynamics and Thermal Engines as a part of the cooperation program between Gubkin University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden). KTH Royal Institute of Technology students are invited to register. Participants are offered to take either two courses within two weeks or one course within one week. Both courses are counted as a part of the KTH academic program.

Program details

The following courses are offered in 2017:

  • Introduction to Petroleum Science and Technology (3 credits),
  • Philosophy and Methodology of Science (4.5 credits)

Fees: no course fees; however, participants are responsible for their own living and transportation expenses. Gubkin University provides all participants with accommodation, including a separate bathroom and a shared kitchen, for the period of studies: single room accommodation – 2,000 RUB per day, double room accommodation 1,000 RUB per day. Gubkin University provides visa invitation letters.
