University students at the All-Russian Winter Scientific School of the Floating University
From February 3 to 5, 2025, the All-Russian Winter School of the Floating University was held in several cities of Russia (Kaliningrad, Arkhangelsk, St. Petersburg). Gubkin University was represented at the sites by students from various faculties, members of the student scientific society.
The organizer of the site, aimed at attracting students and young scientists to research the World Ocean in Kaliningrad, was the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University.
Three training tracks were prepared for students at this site: "Geology and Geophysics of the Baltic", "Marine Biology of the Baltic", "Climate and Environmental Monitoring". Focusing on the specialization at Gubkin University, as well as scientific interest, members of the student scientific society, students of the GM-23-11 group Daria Mikhailova and Roman Fetisov, whose scientific supervisor is the Deputy Director of the AO IO RAS for research, PhD Leila Bashirova, completed training on the track "Geology and Geophysics of the Baltic".
In addition to theoretical knowledge, students received an understanding of specialized software that allows solving applied problems in the field of geophysics, such as processing and interpretation of seismic data.
The track is dedicated to the methods, problems and features of climate and environmental monitoring, especially considering this topic from the perspective of marine expeditions to the Baltic. In addition to classes directly related to monitoring, lectures were held on the low-carbon transformation of Russia, on scientific etiquette and rules for writing scientific articles, as well as on the geology and biology of the Baltic Sea. For in-person participation, students received participant certificates and also acquired the opportunity to apply for a research expedition to the seas and oceans to make new scientific discoveries.
The organizer of the site in St. Petersburg was the All-Russian Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean named after Academician I.S. Gramberg.
Four training tracks were prepared for students at this site, including "Solid Minerals of the World Ocean", "Comprehensive Geophysical Study of Polar Shelves", "Geological Mapping of Water Areas", and "Gases in Marine Sediments". Focusing on the specialization at Gubkin University, as well as scientific interest, members of the student scientific society, students of the HEM-23-06 group Andrey Golovenko and Maxim Sidorenko, scientific supervisor - head of the Department of Industrial Ecology, professor, Doctor of Engineering Sciences. Elena Mazlova, as well as a student of the GEM-23-03 group Anna Zenovskaya, the scientific supervisor - associate professor of the Department of Geoecology Sergey Yakutseni, were trained on the track "Gases in Marine Sediments".
The track is dedicated to the processes of formation and transformation of organic matter in marine sediments into hydrocarbon gases, as well as geophysical methods for detecting gas hydrate accumulations. In addition to lectures, practical classes were held in the Python program, as well as excursions to the laboratory of the institute for analyzing the chemical composition of gas samples and pore water of bottom sediments using gas and ion chromatography. The program ended with an excursion to the educational site "Fertorium" of Fertoing LLC, where stand versions of the automated workplace of robot pilots for monitoring the state of offshore gas wells, as well as domestic developments in the field of marine engineering were shown.
Gubkin University was represented at the site in Arkhangelsk by a member of the student scientific society, a student of the HEM-23-06 group Vladislav Vishnevsky, whose scientific supervisor is associate professor of the industrial ecology department, PhD Tatyana Smirnova. The organizer of the site in Arkhangelsk was the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov.
Two training tracks were prepared for students at this site, including "Biodiversity of the Arctic and Subarctic" and "Pollutants of the Arctic region: types, sources, research methods". Focusing on the specialization at Gubkin University, as well as scientific interest, Vladislav Vishnevsky studied and gained knowledge on the track "Pollutants of the Arctic region: types, sources, research methods".
Over the course of three days, specialists in their fields and university researchers talked about various pollutants that can be found in the Arctic, their migration routes and origins, as well as methods for sampling and identifying them during a ship expedition in northern latitudes.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, students in the tracks received an idea of the laboratory and instrumentation equipment that the university is equipped with for high-precision and selective qualitative and quantitative analysis of various substances of organic and inorganic origin.
Vladislav Vishnevsky actively participated in all events at the site, attended an excursion to the Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment "Arktika" and the visitor center "Arctic Embassy", and also received knowledge that will help him broaden his horizons and apply it in his professional life. Also, for students of Gubkin University who have completed the winter school of the Floating University, the opportunity opens up to get into a research expedition to the seas and oceans to make new scientific discoveries.
