The 13th scientific and practical international seminar "Methane extraction from coal deposits. Problems and prospects"

On May 15, 2025, the 13th scientific and practical international seminar "Methane extraction from coal deposits. Problems and prospects" was held at the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University).

Traditionally, the seminar brought together representatives of two extractive industries - coal and gas - to discuss current issues of methane extraction from coal seams. Extraction of methane from coal seams solves several problems at once, which were formulated during the preparation of the first seminar, which was held in 2009: the safety of coal mining by mine methods, reducing methane emissions into the atmosphere, and solving social problems in coal mining regions. The chairmen of the expert commission were Boris Sharipov, Deputy Head of Department - Head of Department of PJSC Gazprom, and Maria Khaidina, Associate Professor of the Department of Development and Operation of Gas and Gas Condensate Fields.

The event was attended by more than 50 industry representatives. 14 reports were heard, including on the topics of methane production and degassing goals, technology for extracting methane gas from coal deposits, and interaction between the coal and gas industries in these issues. An important outcome of the seminar was the conclusion on the need to bring these topics to the legislative level in order to determine the place of each of the participating industries based on state regulatory documents.

In 2025, the seminar was organized jointly by Gubkin University, PJSC Gazprom, and the Academy of Mining Sciences with the support of the Gubkin University Student Scientific Society.
