International Conference on Ensuring the Security of Energy Facilities in the Arctic

On October 14, 2025, the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University) hosted an international scientific and practical conference, "International Scientific and Technical Cooperation in Ensuring the Security of the Northern Sea Route and Energy in the Arctic Region," organized jointly with the CIS Institute of Security Problems.

Opening the conference, Pavel Kalashnikov, Vice Rector for Research at Gubkin University, noted the importance and relevance of the issues, as well as the need to find effective scientific and technical solutions for the development of Arctic energy.

The conference received greetings from Nikolai Stupakov, Director of the Russian Federation Security Council and the Institute of CIS Security Problems; Maria Zabolotskaya, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN; Sergei Pospelov, Executive Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization; Nikolai Podufalov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Education and Scientific Director of the Laboratory for the Development of Higher Professional Education at the Center for the Development of Higher and Secondary Education of the Russian Academy of Education; and several other international and Russian organizations.

The conference was moderated by Dmitry Medvedev, Head of the Department of International Cooperation in Security at the Faculty of Integrated Security of the Fuel and Energy Complex, and Pavel Mareev, Head of the Center for International and Regional Projects at the Institute of CIS Security Problems.

The event was attended by over 90 scholars and experts from relevant CIS institutions, the Institute of Europe, the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow and Far Eastern higher education institutions, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and staff from Gubkin University.

The conference discussed prospects for international scientific cooperation in the Arctic to ensure national, regional, and global security. Particular attention was paid to the development of the energy sector and transport communications in the region.

The need for a detailed study of the training of new-level specialists in international scientific and technical cooperation to address relevant issues in the Arctic region and the Far East, as well as to ensure the development of Russian interests in the implementation of the Northern Sea Route project, was also highlighted.

The event was organized with the Student Scientific Society of Gubkin University.
