Gubkin University hosted the International Congress: Oil and Gas Horizons 2017

On November 28 – 30, 2017 85 representatives of 34 universities from 23 countries took part in the 9th International Youth Scientific and Practical Congress "Oil and Gas Horizons" organized by Gubkin University SPE Student Chapter.

The silver sponsors of the Congress became Schlumberger and Shell, and the exclusive sponsor – Weatherford. LUKOIL, Halliburton, Gubkin Store and Kolibri were the partners.

Information support to the event was provided by such publishers as Oil&Gas Journal Russia, Nedra, Offshore Russia, Oil&Gas Journal Eurasia, Sphere Oil and Gas, PRO-ARCTIC, OilGASCom, Poisk News, Young Petro, TheWayAhead, ECHO as well as such student organizations as GUtv and Kerosin magazine.

The official ceremony was opened by a welcome speech made by the Vice-Rector for Academic Work Vladimir Koshelev. The event participants were also greeted by the Vice-President for Marketing at Schlumberger Artem Karapetov, the Head of Personnel Training and Development in Russia and Central Asia at Weatherford Anna Demeshkina, the Regional Director of SPE Russia and the Caspian Ayzhana Zhusupbekova, SPE Russia and Caspian Regional Director Anton Ablaev, taking up the post of the Chair of the Committee of Young Professionals at SPE International Vlada Streletskaya.

After the opening remarks, the plenary session was held where the event participants discussed the issues related to the topic “Ecological footprint of the energy sector. Step into the future”.

The main goals for students who came from different parts of the world to participate in the Congress were to present their research projects and exchange knowledge and experience with their peers.

During the Congress the event participants discussed such topics as geology and geophysics, drilling and completion, oil and gas field development, oil and gas chemistry, health, safety, environment and petroleum economics and management as well as were able to demonstrate their achievements at additional sections, including the PhD papers contest and the Young professionals paper contest.

The second day of the event began with the presentation of poster reports, where the participants demonstrated their projects. Afterwards, the regional round table aimed to discuss the activities and development of SPE Chapters in the Region and the international round table focused on the discussion of such projects as summer schools, SPE Connect and PetroStage were held.

In addition, the presentation of Weatherford was made by the Head of Personnel Training and Development in Russia and Central Asia at Weatherford Anna Demeshkina who told about the company's activities and personnel development. After the presentation, the participants were offered to make a tour around the University facilities and take part in the PetroOlympic Games - the intellectual game enabling the players to test their knowledge in the oil and gas area.

The second day ended with the award ceremony – the winners of the technical sessions and the PetroOlympic Games received certificates and gifts.

On the final day of the Congress, the participants were able to visit such companies as Schlumberger, Repsol, Salym Petroleum, Gazprom Transgaz Moscow, the Moscow factory of thermal automatics (MZTA). The participants were also offered to get familiar with the main sights of the capital, including the Tretyakov Gallery and the Moscow Planetarium.
