A Methodology for Assessing Sorbents for Oil Spill Response Has Been Developed

A comprehensive methodology for assessing the effectiveness of sorbent materials for recovering oil spills on water and land has been developed at the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University).

The methodology consists of two stages. The first involves laboratory testing, where the materials are tested for basic properties: oil absorption capacity, buoyancy, bulk density, and particle size distribution. The second stage involves testing simulating real spill conditions.

"This methodology allows us to move from subjective assessments to evidence-based practice in the field of environmental safety in the oil and gas industry. This is not only a matter of economic efficiency but also a significant contribution to environmental conservation," noted Elena Mazlova, Head of the Industrial Ecology Department.
