The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for physical science subjects uses the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).

The 13 performance indicators assess several areas of physical sciences, including chemistry, physics and astronomy, earth and marine sciences, mathematics and statistics, geology and astronomy.

This year the list has expanded to include 1,054 universities, up from 963 last year.
