Educational Program: "The International Climate Process and the Fundamentals of Multilateral Diplomacy"
From September 22 to 28, 2026, as part of International Climate Week in Sirius, the educational program "The International Climate Process and the Fundamentals of Multilateral Diplomacy" took place. This program is part of a unique initiative implemented by the International Scientific Center for Ecology and Climate Change at Sirius University.
The program aims to train young experts who possess knowledge of climate science and the ability to apply it within the international negotiation process. Particular emphasis is placed on developing the competencies required to participate in multilateral climate diplomacy, present Russia’s scientifically grounded position, and operate effectively in international negotiation forums. The program is implemented with the support of Gazprombank JSC.
Participant selection was conducted in several stages. In August 2026, Sirius University of Science and Technology hosted the "International Diplomacy and Climate Change" school-conference. During this event, young researchers studied the scientific foundations of climate change and anthropogenic ecosystem transformation, climate risks, international institutions and the legal frameworks for sustainable development cooperation, as well as issues regarding climate policy and the interplay between science and diplomacy.
Stepan Zainulin, a PhD student at the Department of Offshore Oil and Gas Field Development, represented Gubkin University in the program.
The participation of a representative from the oil and gas university in the climate diplomacy program is particularly significant given the energy sector's growing role in the international climate agenda. Issues such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, implementing climate projects, carbon regulation, and identifying technological solutions for low-carbon development are increasingly becoming part of international cooperation, requiring a combination of industry-specific engineering expertise and an understanding of climate policy mechanisms.
Showcasing members of the Gubkin University Student Scientific Society at external venues is carried out as part of the Society’s development program, "Strategy of New Discoveries."
