155th Anniversary of the Birth of Ivan M. Gubkin
September 21, 2026 marks the 155th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist, founder of Russian oil geology and founder of our university, Academician Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin!
Ivan Mikhailovich’s name is inscribed in golden letters in the history of Russian science and industry. It was he who stood at the origins of the system of oil and gas education in the country, foreseeing the colossal potential of the fuel and energy complex for the future of the state.
Thanks to his strategic thinking, energy, and devotion to his work, a powerful foundation was laid for training engineering personnel capable of solving ambitious tasks. I.M. Gubkin’s scientific works were ahead of their time. His fundamental research on the origin of oil and the theory of the formation of oil and gas fields determined the development of geological exploration for many decades to come.
The scientific school he created educated generations of talented researchers and industry professionals. For Gubkin University, bearing the name of its founder is a great honor and responsibility. Today, within the walls of our university, the traditions laid down by Ivan Mikhailovich are carefully preserved – devotion to scientific inquiry, an inseparable link between theory and practice, a constructive approach to solving state objectives, and deep respect for the engineering profession.
The work of Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin continues to live on in the achievements of postgraduate students, faculty, and graduates who work daily for the benefit of our country’s energy security, preserving the university’s status as the leading university of the oil and gas industry.
