Gubkin University at the international round table “Logistics in the Arctic: Problems of International Cooperation”

On 28 November 2019, the Assistant Professor of the Department of National Security of the Faculty of Integrated Security of the Fuel and Energy Complex at Gubkin University Dmitry Medvedev delivered a presentation at the international round table “Logistics in the Arctic: Problems of International Cooperation” held in St. Petersburg.

The round table was organized by the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University with the support of the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and was aimed to discuss the problems of transport and logistics infrastructure development in the Arctic region. The event program included the following topics for discussion:

  • Experience in implementing international transport and logistics projects in the Arctic;
  • Logistics solutions for the oil and gas industry in the Arctic;
  • New technologies in the development of transport and logistics system of the Arctic;
  • Environmental risks in the implementation of transport and logistics projects in the Arctic;
  • Political risks in the implementation of transport and logistics projects in the Arctic;
  • Training of qualified personnel for transport and logistics infrastructure of the Arctic.

The round table brought together the experts from Czech Republic, Finland, Norway and Russia who elaborated on key aspects of the development of international projects in the Arctic, and noted the relevance of mutually beneficial cooperation in the implementation of long-term capital intensive projects in the region.

In his presentation, Dmitry Medvedev also noted the importance of developing information infrastructure in the Arctic region, giving an example of the international project for laying fiber optic cable along the bottom of the Northern Sea Route. In addition, he emphasized the hybrid nature of modern security threats and the need to improve the means of integrated safety of critically important facilities in the Russian Arctic.
